We awakened to a dense fog, blanketing Pebble Isle Marina early in the morning. Fog on the rivers occurs quite often in the fall and during this portion of the loop we encountered it at least several times a week. On this morning, we delayed our departure about 45 minutes to allow some clearing. As the morning warmed up, the sky turned blue and the fog disappeared. We had a very nice run southward to Clifton, Tennessee. We had scheduled a one night stay at the Clifton Marina which has a very narrow entrance channel followed by an immediate 90° turn to starboard to fit into a side tie slip adjacent to the Marina restaurant. A 60 foot trawler had proceeded us and taken the much easier and wider slip to our port. However, the trawler's crew (George and Christine: Resonance) came out on the dock and helped us tie up. Somewhat amazingly the captain of Resonance, George, is a retired neurosurgeon from Lincoln, Nebraska. He is on the loop with his wife Christine and they currently live in Oklahoma. George trained in Iowa and this led to a very interesting and lengthy series of reminisces. As we were talking on the dock, Shalimar, an N 37 with Steve And Linda aboard, pulled into the marina. The six of us went to dinner 10 feet away at the Marina restaurant. We were very fortunate because it was country and western karaoke night. Dinner was fun, we finished the evening with drinks on board Resonance, followed by a good night sleep. We ended up spending time with George & Christine at Aqua Yacht and became fast friends.
