Isn't boating supposed to be relaxing? It wasn't after we returned to Port 32 Marina, That's when our work really started. It had never occurred to us that the previous owner would leave all of his possessions on board. But in fact that was the case. The drawers were filled, the storage spaces were overflowing, we called the broker to ask what to do about this, and he helpfully, replied, "you can keep whatever you want, throw the rest away." That was actually a lot easier said than done we began monopolizing all the Marina loading carts in a constant procession, from the stern of the boat, up the ramp, across the grassy knoll, through the parking lot to a dumpster which we were almost single-handedly filling each week. All of this was accomplished under the summer Florida sun.

Keep whatever you want, throw the rest away.

The previous owner was paranoid to a degree about stocking spare parts because he spent a lot of time in the Bahamas where the supply chain is not robust. However, thousands of spare parts were stored in unlabeled bins, scattered throughout the boat and it storage areas. It took days to locate all of this and dump it into a giant pile in the salon, and then an entire week to catalog and photograph all of these treasures into an inventory system where they could be tracked. We bought several dozen Walmart, waterproof storage containers and label them with numbers that corresponded to the virtual containers in the inventory database. This was a lot of work and took a lot of time but later in our voyage being able to immediately locate a spare part and know what bin number and what storage compartment in the boat to find it was invaluable.

Our replacement work continued with three new chart plotters, a flybridge VHF radio and stereo and an open array radar to upgrade the boats electronics. We also reupholstered every surface on the boat both inside and outside. I got to do some projects with my laser, including an espresso rack holder, a call an emergency plaque for the cockpit and a electric panel clear cover for the pilot house. We also removed and replaced both mattresses, all the linens and carpeting.
